An ETF can look like one investment, but it may hold hundreds of companies. ratiofox opens that wrapper and shows what those businesses earn, sell, and cost together.

The key idea

What does “look-through” mean?

It means looking past the ETF’s name and price to the companies underneath. For each holding, ratiofox works out the share of the company that belongs to the ETF. It then adds those slices together.

Start with the ETF’s actual holdings and their weights.

Find each company’s market value, earnings, and sales.

Total the real businesses
Combine the slices first, then calculate one honest ratio.

A simple example

Imagine a $100 ETF with two companies

Trailing P/E

Company Alpha $60 value $3 earnings

Company Beta $40 value $1 earnings

Together $100 ÷ $4 25× P/E

ratiofox does not average the companies’ individual P/E ratios. It adds the underlying value and earnings first. That is the difference between a shortcut and a true look-through calculation.

Why it matters

The label on the fund is only the beginning.

Two ETFs can sound similar while owning very different companies. Look-through fundamentals make those differences easier to see.

Price compared with earnings

P/E shows how much the basket costs for each dollar of earnings produced by its companies.

Price compared with sales

P/S shows how much the basket costs for each dollar of revenue. It can add context when earnings move around.

Compare on the same basis

Use the same method for an ETF, a stock, or your own portfolio, so the numbers mean the same thing.

Three useful viewpoints

The period changes the story.

ratiofox shows each core ratio from three angles instead of pretending that one period tells you everything.

Trailing: The latest four announced quarters added together.
Latest-quarter run rate: The newest announced quarter multiplied by four.
Latest fiscal year: The company’s most recently announced full year.

Built to be honest about the gaps

A ratio is only as useful as its ingredients.

Losses stay in the calculation.
If a company loses money, that loss reduces the basket’s total earnings. It is not quietly removed.
Missing data stays missing.
ratiofox shows coverage instead of pretending an unknown value is zero.
Money is made comparable.
Company values are converted to US dollars with auditable currency and exchange-rate details.
Ratios are calculated locally.
ratiofox starts with prices, shares, earnings, and revenue—not a provider’s unexplained ratio.

Small, server-side traffic records

To understand demand and keep the service reliable, ratiofox records a short-lived server log containing the visitor IP address, visit time, requested path, request method, response status, and response size. It does not put analytics cookies in your browser or use a browser analytics tracker.

Sensitive request details are excluded.
Queries, cookies, referrers, browser identifiers, request bodies, email addresses, and account identifiers are not written to the analytics log.
Country lookup stays on the RatioFox server.
A local country database converts IP addresses into approximate countries. Visitor records are not sent to an external analytics provider.
Raw records expire.
Raw traffic logs are retained for no more than 30 days. The private dashboard anonymizes IP addresses and is available only to the RatioFox operator.
